PRIMULA AURICULA.

Primula auricula.

Now is the time that I divide and repot my Primula auricula's, every one has their own time for dividing and repotting, but I find Autumn suits me best. The days a still a little warm and the nights are crisp.
My potting mix has a lot of sharp grit mixed through a good potting mix and I also like to add a lot of leaf mulch that has not rotted down totally, with just some leaves to add a bit of lightness to the mix.
I also find Primula auricula like to be divided, and we shouldn't be afraid to divide them, it keeps them strong and healthy,  I find  they go backwards if you don't divide them. When you pull the plants apart. you can check to see if they have root aphis which can kill your plants and also aphis get under their leaves and on their stems. Water in well and a feed, liquid or granular food is fine.
It is best to pull yellow leaves downwards at this time of the year, by holding the plant at the top, so as to not pull the plant out of the pot, if old leaves are left on the plant they can cause rot.
I use plastic pots as I find they don't dry out as much as clay pots in our hot summers, I only grow Primula auricula in my glass house and not in the garden. When they flower I like to make a display of them, but do not have an Auricula Theatre for them but just an old black wrought Iron stand .
I do know John grows all his Primula auricula in large clay pots and does very well with them and he is in a much hotter area than us, so it can be done if well managed.

Pen Lan Plants have a wonderful collection of Primula auricula available each year by mail order, Sue said she doesn't have multiples of anything left, but if you only want one of each of some varieties they are available Pen Lan Plants. As of course Primula Nurseries in the UK have wonderful displays of Primula auricula, but we don't do too badly as Sue has imported a lot of her Primula different ones are available each year as she bulks up her stock.
